In the 1980’s Carris changed to one-man operation of the trams. That meant that the driver had to do the conductor job too, assisted by ticket validation machines. The trams also needed driver operated doors. Although the fleet was still much larger than needed, not all trams could be modified for one-man operation. Above that there was a shortage of trams that was allowed to work the lines with the steepest gradients. As solution with the use of existing trams, a new type of single-end tram was created in the 1980’s that could operate on the steepest hills. They were withdrawn in the mid-1990’s.
There were two sub types. The series 761-763 got the trucks and motors of three trams of the 1947 built series 736-745. This series was allowed on the steepest hills, but could not be modified for one-man operation. The trucks and motors were combined with three 1930’s built bodies of series that could be modified for one-man operation, but were not allowed to work on the steepest inclines.

The series 771-785 was converted from fifteen trams of the series 552-571. This last series could be modified for one-man operation. They were not allowed to work the steepest hills, but with a relative simple modification that was solved.
